Bats that have lived in Panagudi, Tirunelveli district, for more than a century are severely affected by firecrackers burst during temple festivals. Samuga Pothunala Iyakkam (TNSPI) has urged a ban on firecrackers in their habitats and strict enforcement of wildlife protection laws, noting the important role bats play in ecological balance, agriculture and biodiversity conservation.
