A park was established at a cost of around Rs. 1 crore under the AMRUT Scheme 2017-20 in the Puliyadi area under Nagercoil Corporation. Located near the scenic Putheri Lake, the park was neatly developed for public recreation and for children to play. It was inaugurated by Pon. Radhakrishnan, who was then Union Minister of State for Finance and Shipping. However, as the Corporation has carried out no maintenance work at the park, it has become buried under dense overgrowth.
All the play equipment meant for children has broken down and become unusable. The structures and decorative iron railings in the park have also been damaged. As the park has become overgrown and a refuge for venomous creatures, people have stopped visiting it out of fear. Consequently, the area has turned into a garbage dumping ground. It now emits a foul smell and has become a place that creates sanitation problems.
The park exists only in name; what is visible is an overgrown thicket. Several lakhs of rupees of public money are being wasted, while the unusable park has become a gathering place for drunkards and a refuge for anti-social elements. It has lost its beauty and splendour and stands in a ruined condition. This park, beautifully located on the banks of Putheri Lake within the Corporation area, once served as a resting place for many people; now the park itself has been abandoned without care and is in a distressing condition.
The bushes and thorny growth should be removed and the park renovated for public use. Damaged, collapsed and broken structures should be repaired, and appropriate steps should be taken so that the park once again attracts visitors and people seeking peace can come without fear. The damaged science park should be restored for use by children and students. Samuga Pothunala Iyakkam (TNSPI) has urged appropriate action to bring Puliyadi Park back into public use and to maintain and protect it continuously.
In this connection, under the leadership of General Secretary A.S. Shankarapandian, State Secretary of the Information Technology Wing E. Suresh, South Zone Organising Secretary Dr. S. Nagarajan, Kumari Division Secretary M. Alex Moses, Kumari District Coordinator P. Chandra, Kumari (East) District President T. Kuzhanthaisamy, Secretary R. Sarabhai, Organising Secretary C.V. Murugan, Vice-President S. Michael Raj, Deputy Secretary M. Nagarajan, Treasurer Pon. Mariammal and other office-bearers met the Kanyakumari District Collector and submitted a petition containing their demands.
Head Office,
Samuga Pothunala Iyakkam (TNSPI).
